Underground fires still burning today

ItТs been twenty-one years since the tragic fire that swept through the small mining town of Silent Hill, taking with it the lives of hundreds of residents, and the coal deposits under the streets are still burning. The roads into Silent Hill have long been closed, and warning signs have been posted to keep the curious away from what has become one of AmericaТs most mysterious ghost towns.

Access into the city is restricted because the burning coal deposits release deadly gasses. A small whiff in the open air is enough to make you dizzy and nauseous, but go inside of wrong building and youТre likely to asphyxiate in minutes. This happened in 1987, when three teenagers on a dare bypassed all warning signs and explored some of the boarded up buildings. Two were found dead the next day, and the other, Harold J. Knowles, is still in a coma.

I was allowed to walk the buckled and melting asphalt of the streets, under the close supervision of Sherrif Gucci, who grew up as a boy in the city of Silent Hill.

УStay away from that side of the road,Ф he calls out from his car, Уthe soles of your shoes will melt.Ф And indeed, I can feel my feet getting warm. When I ask him about that fateful night he shakes his head, УI went away to college, the first in my family to do so, and while I was gone my entire family died in that fire. All my friends, all my family, gone. It makes me sick when kids come up here on a dare. They donТt realize it could kill them!Ф

I catch a breath of something that smells like nutmeg, and instantly I have a migraine.

УYup, you just got some,Ф Gucci tells me, УthatТs whole sectors of brain cells you just lost.Ф

As we drive back down out of the city, we discuss how many people have been lost here since the disaster, and how the numbers keep growing.

УWe had one sicko snatch a kid in Gans County three years back. He cut that kid up and dumped the corpse into a sulphur vent. We couldnТt get the body outЕ itТs still there.Ф We pass the roadblocks, and sure enough, a couple of sightseers with a camcorder are walking up the road. Gucci pulls the car over and starts angrily turning them back.
